There is no spelling homework for this week. I have assigned a larger than normal amount of vocab though. The students must complete 24 words which comes out to 8 words a day. They need to include pictures and sentences must be at least 12 words long. I am giving them ample time to work on it in class this week as we work on DRA assessments at the same time in class. The 4 suffixes for the week are -ist, -ish, -ful, and -ion.

The kids really enjoyed their plant projects and I enjoyed hearing all of their presentations! They have enjoyed growing plants within our classroom. We tried growing beans in a cup and then created our own “green house” by planting a bean in a Ziploc bag. We are beginning to learn about bugs and insects and what roles they play in a plant’s life cycle. The PTA purchased 7-10 caterpillars for our class. We will be watching and observing them transform from caterpillars into butterflies. Once we have completed our study on bugs and insects we will begin our study on matter. We will be learning about solids, liquids, and gases.

May Newsletter:

Important Dates:

May 10th- Mr. Larry’s last day (Wear a tie to honor him)

May 17th- Crazy Hat Day (For just our class)

May 18th- Sock Hop

May 23rd- Jog-a-Thon

May 28th- Memorial Day (No School)

May 31st- Field Day

June 1st- Crazy Hair Day

June 1st- Report Cards go home and last day of school

Field Day: Information was sent home regarding field day. I will need parent help in donating supplies as well as helping the day of for set-up and clean up. Please fill out the bottom of the yellow form and return to school.

Jog-a-Thon- This event is being thrown by our student council. All the money will go directly back to the school. They want to raise money for our school and also promote the healthy habit of exercise. The money our class raises will go to having a Promethean Board put in our classroom. A Promethean board is an interactive whiteboard. You can see what Promethean has to offer at http://www.prometheanworld.com/en-us/research Please help our school move forward in providing interactive technology in the classroom by donating what you can. I will be donating as well because I am so excited to use this technology. Thank you!

Read-a-Thon- I was so impressed with all the student’s enthusiasm and dedication to participating in the read-a-thon. I believe it was a great success. Even if we do not win for the most minutes, I will have a small celebration to show them how proud I am of them! Thank you for all your support as well in promoting literacy!

Registration Packets- Registration packets for the 2012-2013 school year will be going home on Thursday May 17th and will be due Thursday May 24th. Please make sure to fill the forms out completely and return to school.

Math- To end the year, we will be covering telling time to the hour and the half hour. Encourage your child to look at clocks that are around. We will also be discussing elapsed time, meaning if some activity takes a long time or a short time to complete. I am extending this concept to understanding the length of a day and a week. Then we will continue with addition and subtraction strategies throughout the rest of the year.

Writing- The book turned out so great! We have some future authors among us. They took a lot of pride in their work and I believe the book will be a favorite at home. We have sent out the packet and will be receiving the published books towards the end of the year.

Science- We are continuing to plant our garden. It is on the south side of the building and you can have your child show you the work we have done! We are working on our plant murals as well. This is a great way to practice working in a group as well as apply their learning about plants. We have also received caterpillars from the PTA and will be watching them transform into their chrysalis, emerge as butterflies, and the finally releasing them into the environment. We will also be discussing the 3 states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas). I will be sending some small experiments related to the 3 states of matter as homework.

Earth Day- I was so excited to see the great things that everyone did on Earth Day to help our environment. I believe that it these are lasting memories for our children!

Conferences- Our school does not have end of the year conferences. However, if you would like to meet with me regarding your child’s progress, what they can work on over the summer, or their NWEA scores please email me and we can set up a time to meet.

Summer Birthdays- We will be celebrating all the summer birthday one day towards the end of May. Each child will still receive a birthday book from the class. I will be contacting each birthday student’s families to bring in a small snack or drink for the celebration.

End of the Year- The end of the year tends to be a crazy time. I will keep my schedule the same until the last week of school. The last week of homework will be May14th-May 20th.

This year has flown by and I always love reflecting about where students began the year and finish. Your children impress me daily with their intelligence, kindness, humor, and love of learning. I really hope that I have helped them on their path to becoming lifelong learners.

Ms. Kelsey

I cannot believe this is our last newsletter of the school year. The year has flown by, and the kids have grown so much! Below are important events happening this last month around our school and in our classroom.

Sunday, May 6th: Run for the Zoo

Thursday, May 10th: Wear a Tie Day for Mr. Larry Day

Monday, May 14th: NWEA testing week for K/1

Friday, May 18th: PTA Sock Hop

Wednesday, May 23rd: Jog-a-Thon (during our P.E time)

Monday, May 28th: Memorial Day (no school)

Thursday May 31st: K-1 Field Day

Friday, June 1st: Last Day for Students, Report Cards go home, and Crazy Hair Day

Registration Packets: Registration packets for next school year will go home Thursday, May 17th and will be due by Thursday, May 24th. Please make sure to fill the forms out completely and return to school.

Jog-a-Thon: The student council will be holding a Jog-a-thon to promote healthy exercise and to help raise money for our school. The money will go towards buying technology for our school and our classroom!

NWEA testing: This will be our last NWEA computer test for the school year. If you haven’t already been doing so, please log on to IXL to help your children get used to answering questions on a computer before the testing week.

Field Day: Ms. Charlie will be organizing a fun Field and Water Day for all grades at the park. The K/1s will have their Field Day on Thursday, May 31st. We will be asking for food donations and parent helpers in a letter shortly. Please look for the letter and sign-up via backpack mail.

Science: We just finished our unit on plants. The kids really enjoyed the plant projects. They all did a great job of presenting their timelines and teaching the class about their plants. They also enjoyed growing their own plants and observing the growth in class. We are starting to learn about different types of bugs and how they play a part in a plant’s life cycle. The PTA also purchased 7-10 caterpillars for our class. We will be observing them and watching them transform into butterflies the next couple of weeks. In the middle of the month we will be starting our last science unit on the states of matter. We will learn about solids, liquids and gases.

Spelling and Sight words: I have been so impressed with the student’s scores on their spelling tests. The students have been studying hard and it is showing in their reading and writing. If you haven’t received a sight word list recently, your child is getting the practice they need in class.

Math: We just finished a unit on simple fractions and equal parts. This last month of school, some students will be working on addition and subtraction with bigger numbers, while others will be begin learning early multiplication. We will also be reviewing concepts we’ve learned throughout the year.

Conferences: Our school does not do end of the year conferences. We will be sending report cards home the last day of school. If you would like to meet to discuss your child’s progress, then please let me know.

Summer Birthdays: We will be celebrating the summer birthdays the last week of school. If your child has a summer birthday and you would like to bring in a healthy snack for the class, then please let me know.

Homework: The last weekly homework will be due on Monday, May 21st. Thank you for completing the weekly homework with your child. I think it is important for parents to see what their child is doing in class through weekly homework. I appreciate your consistency and hard work.

Thank you for such an amazing year. Your kiddos are excited and ready to move on to second grade or first grade! I appreciated all your help and support this year. Thank you for helping make our school year a great success!

Ms. Jessi and Ms. Michelle
